- Alone in the cosmos? With the number of stars, its virtually certain that
- there is other life out there somewhere. There are very few singular events
- in science - if it happened here it can happen somewhere else.
-
- Alone in our solar system? With the number of stars capable of sustaining
- intelligent life being a VERY small percentage of the total, it is equally
- as certain that no star with intelligent life is sufficiently close to our
- solar system that they would care to expend the enormous energy/effort to
- come and explore our worlds. Just reverse the situation. Our telescopes are
- good enough now to look for planets around the nearest stars. There aren't
- any that close. Anyone wanting to visit another planet is going to want to
- see where they are going, and be sure it is interesting enough to be worth a
- multi-year trip.
-
- Of course, if anyone has come up with a good workable theory for faster than
- light propulsion that doesn't involve pseudosciencespeak, I'd love to hear
- it. A world of possibility would open up.
